ADVOCACY

The Arc offers an array of advocacy services to individuals with disabilities and to their families. In addition, we work with businesses to ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to employment opportunities. These efforts maintain a focus of human respect and dignity. All individuals are afforded the same right, regardless of disability. The Arc assists individuals in accessing benefits and entitlements through Social Security, SSI, SSDI, PASS (Plan for Achieving Self Support), and Medicaid.
The Arc also has a Human Rights Committee, which addresses any issues where it appears that rights may be being violated. Through this process, assistance is given to the individual to remedy the situation.
Another major issue facing individuals with disabilities is understanding their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act. We provide assistance in helping people know and exercise their rights under the law.
The ADA is the most comprehensive piece of civil rights legislation and includes:
· Title One: Employment provisions.
· Title Two: Issues affecting State and Local Government.
· Title Three: Public Accommodations.
· Title Four: Telecommunications.
· Title Five: Miscellaneous.
While The Arc places a strong emphasis on individual advocacy, the role of public advocacy cannot be ignored. The Arc is involved in local, state, and national advocacy efforts with the following organizations:
· Arc National
· The Idaho State Independent Living Council
· The Consortium for Idahoans with Disabilities
· IDALA (Idaho Assisted Living Association)
· IACRP (Idaho Association of Community Rehabilitation Providers)
· IADDA (Idaho Association of Developmental Disabilities Agencies)
· United Way of Treasure Valley
The Arc is committed to ensuring that the rights of individuals with disabilities are protected through education and that society understands the value of all people regardless of disability.
